I love blossom time in my area. There are so many trees in gardens and along nature strips that announce their fancy spring colours with clusters of mostly white or pink blossoms. The warmer weather wakes them from their winter hibernation and encourages pretty clusters of flowers and fresh new leaves.

The sight raises spirits as we travel around the area but all I need to do is to walk into my backyard. There’s a large crab apple tree (Malus floribunda) near the back fence and, once the first buds appear, I know I’ll be in for a treat. The buds soon multiply and open to show their pink-and-white blossoms. As soon as this happens, the local bees send a message to all their mates: come and get it! There’s a constant buzzing as the bees gorge themselves on the feast of nectar.
As the fresh, green leaves appear, the blossom falls to the ground, creating a carpet of fallen petals. They distribute themselves across the grass, where they create a light mulch. It’s so pretty against the green of the grass.

We need to enjoy the flowers while we can because the winds will soon help detach them and whirl them through the air. Though, that’s another treat we can enjoy.
