A new discovery for me! This mystery by Celia Fremlin is a total delight. It’s gripping and twisty with an ending I did not see coming. It is meticulously plotted. Celia Fremlin used language beautifully and the book also contains lines that made me laugh out loud.

First published in 1959 and republished as an ebook in 2023, this story has not dated. It is a slow burning novel of suspense that I highly recommend.
After I finished Uncle Paul (which I borrowed from the library through the Libby app), I went searching for more about the author and her books. I discovered Celia Fremlin – a life of crime, an article by Victoria Best. I always like to know more about an author if I enjoy their writing and I found this article fascinating.
Now I’m keen to read more of Celia Fremlin’s writing, especially The Hours Before Dawn, for which she won the Edgar Award. Have you read any of her works?
Five stars from me. Read more about Uncle Paul on Goodreads.
