So, there I was on a cold winter’s day, with the westerly winds making the ‘feels like’ temperature outside near zero. What was I doing? Ordering dahlia tubers online.
Dahlias are summer blooms. They flourish on warm, sunny days, not in the depths of the cold. Their flowers constantly delight me and I look forward to dahlia season each year.
You need to think ahead if you are a gardener. I’ve been disappointed in the past when I see plants I admire thriving in other people’s gardens but not in mine because I didn’t plan at the right time. Sometimes, though, I am organised.
New and popular varieties of dahlias sell out quickly. I only wanted a few tubers this year to add new colours to my existing collection – L’Amour, Anne’s Delight and Sugartown Sunrise. All pretty.
They won’t arrive for a couple of months and I’ll need to wait until the ground warms before I can plant them. Then, I’ll enjoy the surprise when they are delivered. Anticipation is part of the pleasure of gardening, isn’t it?
