Fat flower blocks

29 October 2025

Yes, I have multiple unfinished quilts. I can see them stacked up in containers on my shelves. But that’s never stopped me starting a new project.

The urge to appliqué fat flowers came to me when I saw the checked fabric in a local craft store. After buying two colourways, I went home and pencilled a rough drawing of the shape on paper. I included the leaves and stems in one piece with the bloom and add three circles at the top. (Making appliqué circles is something I try to do often so I can get my technique sorted.)

The paper shape became my template and I cut out the checked pieces and looked for a suitable plain fabric from my stash. I liked the look of purple, so I cut 7 ½ inch squares for my background. One block down, and the others all prepared for hand appliqué. Love the effect!
