Garden visitors

6 November 2025

We’re used to having magpies, parrots, cockatoos and galahs in our garden, as well as some smaller birds I don’t know. A pair of magpies regularly walk around, as if they are inspecting the space. They know us and we happily share our garden with them.

In the last couple of weeks, we had a new visitor – a kookaburra. It would fly around the backyard and settle on a tree branch, occasionally calling out. I’ve been pleased to welcome it, since kookaburras are carnivorous and will, hopefully, eat any snakes or mice that may be lurking outside.

The bird must have decided our place was safe. Earlier this week, on a showery day with gusty winds, I spotted three kookaburras perched under our pergola, sheltering from the weather. I’m happy to have them around but I’d be happier if they didn’t deposit their poo on our pergola floor!

I acknowledge the Gundungurra people, custodians of the land where I live and create.
