When you have a few different activities to occupy your time, some of them get neglected. Such is the case for my garden. Strangely though, that doesn’t stop all the plants growing and spreading.
I used to get anxious about this and worry that I should be more serious about maintaining my garden but now I’ve adopted a realistic attitude – just work on a small section at a time.
This is proving to be surprisingly satisfying. I’m not a control freak in my garden but I do like it to look neat. Sadly, that’s not what’s happened. Grass has invaded my beds while other plants go about their business, flowering and setting seed.

Windflowers before cutting back.
Last week, I cut back my spent windflowers. They can look tatty after the petals drop but an hour spent tidying one bed was so rewarding. It was great to be able to see the azaleas and camellias again!

The same bed after cutting back the spent windflowers. I left the ones that are still flowering.
If you want to know more about my windflowers, I’ve written about them before – here and here.
