The number of streaming services showing TV series and movies is increasingly annoying me. It’s fragmenting audiences as people either can’t afford or choose not to subscribe to multiple services. It’s even more annoying when a series you were already watching changes to a different service.
So, when you constantly hear and read about a series that you want to view, you have to think carefully about its value for money. One trick is to sign up for a free trial and binge the series then unsubscribe before the trial finishes. You need to be disciplined to do that!
We had been hearing and reading about Only Murders in the Building since last year and I was keen to watch it. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez investigating a murder in the grand New York building where they lived? Yes please!
We finished the first series last night and it was fabulous. I love a great story, no matter where I find it, and this plot keeps turning as more red herrings are revealed. (I was suspicious of one character who turned out to be the murderer but they were only one of many possibilities.)
The dialogue is hilarious is places and there are some terrific cameo appearances including Sting. The apartment sets are luxurious and the atmosphere is often moody. Don’t let the apparent lightness and occasional goofiness of Steve Martin’s and Martin Short’s characters deceive you. This is a serious fictional murder mystery that is a total delight.
It is on Disney+ in Australia.
