Out of sorts

15 January 2022

Growth is rampant in my garden, due to the constant on-and-off showers we have had for the past several months. I’m over it.

The earth is too wet to garden and never has an opportunity to dry out. I suspect several of my dahlia tubers have rotted in the ground, even some of the ones I planted in November. The dahlias that have grown have no flowers – not even buds – because we haven’t had enough sun to stimulate their formation.

In the meantime, kikuyu grass is thriving in my garden beds. Perhaps I should cultivate it instead of wanting flowers?

To distract myself, I’ve been sorting fabrics and found this textile postcard I screen printed, coloured and stitched. It’s reminded me that growth can be a positive thing. A change of perspective helps.

I don’t feel so out of sorts any longer.
