I started a memoir last year but hadn’t made a much progress until recently. Perhaps I wasn’t ready to write or maybe I hadn’t worked out what to write? It doesn’t matter. My thoughts have been slowly coming together as I grapple with my memories.
It’s an emotional process, choosing the words that best recall the moments. Emotional, yet fascinating, as I discover the events are shrouded in sentiment in my mind. Unravelling these is not a simple process.
This brings me to my three things this Thursday.
Writing a memoir is a way of working through feelings and experiences. Of course it’s going to be an emotional process.
No matter how much you learn about how other people approach memoir writing, it’s all irrelevant if it doesn’t feel right for you. Read as many craft books as you want but go your own way.
Other people may have observations and comments but no one has experienced your life. No one.
